Course Description

This 1-day course is designed to present an overview of the Oil & Gas Industry, the potential and recent finds in the Eastern Mediterranean, the current status, development options and risk factors. The basic understanding provided will allow participants to determine areas of personal or business interest for further review and to assess public announcements from a more informed knowledge base.

Course facilitators short bios

Carol Bailey is a former Country Chairman of Shell Companies in Indonesia, having held Senior Executive and Operational roles in a board range of disciplines in the Oil & Gas and FMCG industries, throughout Asia and Europe.
In 2011, Carol settled in Cyprus providing research, advisory and consulting services to the emerging hydrocarbons and power industries in Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean region.
Carol studied Management Information and Data Processing at Glasgow Caledonian University (1979). She has held executive positions in several management disciplines. During her time in Indonesia she was involved in securing operating licenses, as well as the negotiations of major contracts for land, construction of facilities and provision of third party services.

Abboud Zahr is the Managing Director of the DEP Levant Oil & Gas Company in Cyprus; prior to this position Mr. Zahr was Managing Director of the Oil and Gas division at Design Engineering Partners in Lebanon; Business Development Manager at the Khadda International General Contracting in Kuwait.
In 1993 Mr. Abboud Zahr received his Master in Business Administration from the Christian-Albrecht-University in Kiel, Germany; in 1989 his Bachelor of Sience in Business Administration from Saint Joseph University in Beirut, Lebanon. He speaks and writes fluently English, Frensh and German.
Having worked in Kuwait, Mr. Zahr received an extensive experience in the Oil and Gas Field. Major alliances have been built with world renown EPC companies and important projects, exceeding one billion Dollars mark were won and executed. In previous industry experience consisted of developing complex upstream and midstream projects involving oil and gas infrastructure.
He has published several articles about Oil & Gas in leading Lebanese and Cypriot newspapers, and is a founding member of the "Beirut-Berlin Academic Forum".

Gary Lakes is a Nicosia-based editor and journalist whose current primary focus is East Mediterranean energy. Currently Co-Director of the Energy Program at the Cyprus-based European Rim Policy and Investment Council (ERPIC), Gary is a frequent contributor to international energy media. He was an editor with the Middle East Economic Survey (MEES) for 22 years covering the East Mediterranean, the Caspian and Southern Corridor regions, North Africa and the Middle East. Gary is a frequent participant in regional energy conferences. His career in the region spans three decades.
